Agency and time …

What do we do when a child is struggling? Struggling to compose their thoughts, to negotiate with friends, to find an opinion or an answer, struggling to learn?

 

Kath Murdoch shared a video clip at her talk this evening.

 

We watched this poor tortoise really struggling to turn off its back. We all wanted to rescue him. To jump up and help him. Imagine he’s a child … Imagine the feeling of success that he would feel when he helped himself … When he succeeded, maybe with some advice, maybe with some peer talk, maybe by doing inquiry. Just imagine!

How often do we jump in without giving children enough time to think, enough time to negotiate with their peers, enough space to work out how they want to work through their difficulties? 

How do we know when they  need us to step in and how much input they really need? 

Are we listening?

Are we facilitating learning about themselves, the world and their learning or are we being life savers? Is that what they need?
